EIT Manufacturing contracted Wolfgang Kniejski to develop detailed concepts for creating business opportunities from manufacturing data spaces while adhering to the Gaia-X standards. Thereby, he is facing one of the main challenges: to explain companies, especially those without technical skills, the data space concept and how the “data spaces” paradigm is different from previous data sharing approaches. Furthermore, it is important to demonstrate clearly what are the real benefits of using the data space approach and how it can improve data valorization both inside the company and externally. In this context Wolfgang Kniejski published together with his co-authors Felix Hoffmann, Dr. Christian Bölling and Johannes Hunschofsky the whitepaper “Federating a manufacturing data space. Aspects of business modelling and governance“.
Core Learnings of the publication are:
👉 By following Gaia-X data sovereignty guidelines, sufficient trust can be established, allowing participants to safely operate within the manufacturing data space.
👉 Innovative business models can emerge within the ecosystem by facilitating secure data sharing or by offering data-driven services.
👉 Competitiveness and sustainability are enhanced through cross-company data sharing, which optimiszes production and reduces resource consumption.
👉 EuProGigant promotes interoperability and a robust ecosystem, enabling seamless connectivity across diverse manufacturing systems.
The whitepaper was introduced to the public at the EuProGigant Open House Day in October 2024, which took place in the beautiful Palais Ferstel in Vienna, Austria. The pictures shows Leonore Gewessler (Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology) and Prof. Dr. Jens Schneider, Rector of Techische Universität Wien, presenting the whitepaper together with Wolfgang Kniejski and two of the co-authors.
